The Corner

The Corner!

The Corner!

corner

noun

  1. a place or angle where two sides or edges meet.
  2. a space in a room in a musicians house populated by large amounts of musical equipment

I have long been interested in recording, an interest that started way back in the early 80's when myself and my best friend discovered we could multi track record using a home hifi system that boasted twin cassette decks and two mic inputs. Back then things were very crude, a cheap Dixons microphone, an early 80's Yamaha keyboard for drums and bass, and an early 70's Big Muff fuzz pedal as a direct recording unit for guitar! Sounded horrible admittedly, but myself and my friend wrote many songs, and recorded our own concept albums, and played then to our friends and family and handed out our home made cassettes with our own artwork.

In the late 80's i started collecting studio equipment, starting off with a Fostex X28 multitrack machine; i would utilise the sync track and use a Roland MC50 sequencer to program my drums and keyboards, firing off the sounds from an Alesis drum machine and a Roland U20. As my interest grew, and my need for new sounds grew my gear grew; my friends and I would all have a "corner" in our bedrooms, where we would spend countless hours either recording song ideas or practising. The actual act of recording even became known as "doing some corner", something that we still say to this day!

Eventually I forfilled a dream, buying a house with a basement and having it converted into a studio. Originally based around a Yamaha AW4416 hard-disc recorder, this was later integrated with a PC music computer running a very early version of Cubase VST, as well as out board rack gear and various units for recording real amps in a home environment. This old studio in my house produced many projects; countless tracks for Guitar Techniques and Lick Library, my three book CD's, Rhythm Magazine CD, an album by It Bites, two albums by David Kilminster of The Roger Waters band plus our own project "J" album. I also produced all my backing tracks for guitar clinics.

Cut to 2015 I relocated to Sweden, and started a new life, a family and setup home and work here. I had the gear shipped to Stockholm, and started the process of going through what I wanted to keep and what needed upgrading. Although some of the gear was retired; I replaced the computer based equipment for a Mac based system, and upgraded everything software based, as well as adding an updated UAD and upgrading how I record guitar. I still have the old PC system, as it has an old UAD 1 and a TC Powercore, which are great bits of old computer music kit!

My current setup is by far my best "corner" to date! I am now able to record, mix and master release quality material, and have already received commissions from top UK producer James F Reynolds, Lick Library, and Mesa Boogie. As well as this I have now started branching into video, both product videos production, and filming guitar instructional material. So for all you gear geeks out there that share a love of "corner", here is a list of the gear I use and a few picture..enjoy Jamie
